Somewhere in the swamps of Louisiana
âWater on all sides, just like I said.â
For some reason Cameron seemed to think that when Kentucky said they were marooned in the middle of nowhere, with the sub stuck on top of what might be parts of the city below them, or other metal objects (who knew where they even were) that heâd been exaggerating their lack of prospects.
âI see that,â Cameron said, his face darkening with the same realization as Kentuckyâs. âThere musâ be a raft in da sub.â
Not another raft, Kentucky thought, but he was game to get back on dry land, any way shape or form. He followed the man down below and their search began.
After a time, they located a raft that was badly damaged. What were the odds? Cameron sat heavily on the edge of the submarine and raked his hands through his thick, curly hair.
âWeâll figure something out,â Kentucky said, but he wasnât sure that they would. What if they couldnât find a way off? Then what?
âYou canna understand it,â the man said, his accent so heavy it took Kentucky a minute to translate in his mind. âIâve a son. Do ye ken what I mean? A boy. And a wife.â
âOh. I didnât know.â
Cameron slapped the side of the sub, and it made a loud gong that echoed across the swampy water. âHow could ye?â The guy grumbled something.
They sat in silence, in thought.
Kentuckyâs watched the horizon and while he was glad that now he wasnât stranded without food or water, and neither was he alone, he still wondered if they were going to die here.
âMayhap we could swim?â Cameron asked and Kentucky held up a finger.
Kentucky sucked his teeth and then sighed, before pulling a piece of meat from the meal heâd been eating before that heâd placed the leftovers in his pocket for later. Throwing it into the water, it was only seconds before a stream of gators made their way to the surface.
Cameron jumped to his feet as if they could climb up the side. âYe couldâve warned me first! There must beâ¦hundreds of dem.â
Probably more like thousands. But Kentucky knew one thing, that if he swam more than a few seconds in that water, it might be his last. Theyâd scare off with a few of them, since they didnât actually want to eat humans, but this many? He felt like a big juicy human was a temptation too much.
Cameron paced what few steps he could before finally trusting the still water and sitting. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes.
âI told ye I had a son.â
Kentucky nodded though the man couldnât see it.
âBut there is so much more to da story. We tried and tried, Annie and I. She wanted lilâ ones straight off.â He pulled his wallet out and showed Kentucky a photo of a young woman with a giant baby on her lap. âHeâs a big boy, aye? She wanted him straight off and I didna. Hard not tah feel guilty after da babe came.
